Reading Time: 2 minutes

By Michael Avery

I’m sure you’ve heard the question, “What is this painting saying to you?”

I always passed it off as merely a metaphor asked by a salesperson in an art gallery intent on making another sale. But recently I had a realization that revealed a deeper, hidden meaning of the question.

I have known for many years that individual letters of the alphabet have their own color. I’m sure this is true for any alphabet on this planet or beyond. While I don’t “see” the colors inwardly like some clairvoyants likely do, intuitively I “know” these colors at a deeper level.

Consonants seem to have more of the vivid colors with which we’re familiar; vowels, at least for me, are white, black, and neutral colors, and can change how they appear depending upon the consonants flanking them. I prefer not to give examples of the colors of individual words or names, as I don’t want to “front load” your experience unduly.

As a fun experiment, you might ask some friends to use colored pencils or crayons and write the individual letters of the word “HU,” for example, in the colors they feel are representative of the ancient mantra. Will they come up with similar colors?

The combination of colors that make up a name or word have a color all their own. As writers, some words “feel” better because their color or vibrations harmonize with our own. The number of syllables in a word also comes into play when we’re formulating a sentence. Does the sentence flow? If not, perhaps a word with more or less syllables is warranted. Of course, we can build beautiful and colorful sentences or phrases either with or without consciously knowing the color of each letter.

If words have colors, then do colorful paintings “speak” in words telling us a story, singing a song, or reciting a poem? Yes, of course! You’ve probably heard the phrase, “Every picture tells a story.”

So, the next time your spouse asks you what a painting he or she has created is “saying to you,” really tune in and listen with your heart and inner senses. This should be a fun exercise in communication with all life–even artwork– and could lead to further realizations awaiting our discovery.
