By Michael Avery, Featuring Carl Jung, from Seven Signs from the Universe, by Michael and Pichaya Avery

In his 1952 paper, Synchronicity: An Acausal Connecting Principle, Carl Jung proposed that hidden messages could be found when properly interpreting the connection between uncommon events and the person experiencing them. (This is Waking Dreams 101: What was the person thinking at the time of the experience? What was the present focus of their life?)

These meaningful coincidences, Jung suggested, were not coincidental at all, but symbolic messages coming from “something” working for our benefit.

A Flock of Birds

Jung mentioned an exchange with the wife of one of his patients. In casual conversation, she told him that, at the deaths of her grandmother and later her mother, sizable flocks of birds had gathered on the roofs of the houses where these two women were dying.

Years afterwards, when her husband was brought home following his sudden collapse from a heart attack, the wife, unaware of this medical incident, was already in a high state of agitation because she had just watched a large flock of birds alight on their home. She had correctly recognized their arrival as a prophetic waking dream.

To the outside observer, this woman might have appeared “superstitious.” But understanding how waking dream vocabularies are formed, both consciously and unconsciously, our response would likely be: “Of course she knew someone was seriously ill when the flock of birds landed on the roof of her home. That’s what ‘a flock of birds landing on a roof’ represented in her waking dream vocabulary.”

This “Prophetic Waking Dream” is but one way the Universe speaks to us to provide guidance, warnings, confirmations, etc.
