Life has a way of introducing us to people who are looking for a puzzle piece we carry for them. That’s what this poem was for a man I recently met in Mexico. I was there working with a team of medical practitioners at a clinic in a very small town outside Ensenada.

I have a friend who is finishing up the last of her adventures in this life and will be leaving us soon. I wrote a poem for her, her caregivers, family, and friends that I would like to share with others.
While being a deeply spiritual person, she was not the least bit religious about it, and I wanted to hit the right note that everyone could understand and enjoy. Most of this came from my dreams.

Animals love the song of HU. They are drawn to the celestial music like a magnet. My trips to a farm with Mike have proven this to be true.
When Mike was drinking raw goat milk, we would purchase it from a very kind man named Dennis. His goats loved him. Every time Dennis was out of their sight, they would call for him and scream loudly like children throwing a tantrum. It was painful to hear the crying goats. Mike and I did our best to console them by singing HU.

My mom was off on medical leave from the supermarket where she worked as a checker. I didn’t know that she had a double mastectomy scheduled, or the incredible challenge she was facing with breast cancer.
Several transistor radios lined a shelf before me in Montgomery Wards. A couple of my friends had been given radios recently, and I asked for one, too. As I recall, the radios ranged in price from five to fifteen dollars. There was a huge difference in quality between them as well as their price. One was amazing. I was attracted to it immediately, but kept testing the less expensive ones because I knew that fifteen dollars was well beyond my mom’s budget.

This was written several years ago; tweaked in 2021. It’s a traditional piece I now read aloud most Thanksgivings.
The words came to me while I was in the midst of divorce. Part of that change required me to leave the home I’d owned with that spouse. It was tough to let go of a place I’d loved and shared with many close friends and family for over a decade.

I remember waking up from a vivid dream one sunny day, having dozed off in the afternoon. In the dream I had been reading ancient Indian teachings written upon red rock mountain walls. I couldn’t remember the writings when I awoke, but I was left with a deep feeling that there was meaning inscribed upon the Earth itself. It was like a message imprinted from ages of men and women who had crossed the land. Almost as if the planet itself had absorbed the conscious lessons of the lives of those people and was now trying to give back this wisdom to any who would listen.
