This song was inspired by the poetry of Kabir, who lived in India in the 15th century. He was critical of organized religions, and what he considered their meaningless and unethical practices. Instead, he taught that truth is within each sincere person.
His poetry is full of his mystic experiences, and his devotion to the Divine. One day after re-reading many of his poems, I felt inspired to compose this song, drawing on some of Kabir’s metaphors. —Riley

“Out of the night I came,
drawn by the fire’s glow.
A flash of a wing
in the fire’s ring
and into the night I’ll go.”

This was the perfect birthday gift for me today as I have reached 75 years of living this life. Thank you Riley from all the corners of my heart. I love Kabir & your inspired words put to song touched me deeply today. Nothing can be more important & significant than our relationship with the Divine & our own Divinity. Powerful spaces open up when we set the bar as high as it will go. Thank you again, just beautiful !
