In this life I have had many wonderful pets and have learned many spiritual lessons from them. At present, I have four little birds. Only one did I raise from a tiny thumb-sized baby. He was green, so I called him Little Bean. The first day I had him, he jumped off his cage onto the floor where my new rescue cat, Daisy, appeared out of nowhere and snatched him up and carried him off.
Fortunately, I had removed all of her abscessed teeth, so a sharp cry from me caused her to drop Little Bean. I picked him up to comfort him. His heart was beating normally and I was stunned that he seemed no worse for wear. I knew then, that he was special.
One day I walked into my bedroom and Little Bean was buzzing Ti, another precious rescue kitty. Sweetheart, a flightless cockatiel had jumped to the floor and landed next to Ti. Little Bean didn’t know that Ti had accepted the birds as part of her family and wouldn’t harm them. (A very high state of consciousness for a cat, wouldn’t you say.) He was trying to rescue Sweetheart by flying close to Ti’s head to divert her attention, over and over again.
There was no doubt in my mind then, that even though he was tiny, he had great courage and a heart as big as the ocean. I lifted Sweetheart to safety on her cage, and all was well again in Little Bean’s world.
Later on, I adopted two more parakeets. Little Bean fell in love with the yellow one. It was love at first sight for him and I called her Sol. She, like Sweetheart, had never left her cage and as a result, never learned to fly. Whenever she fell off the cage, she had to wait for me to rescue her.
One night I went into my room and Little Bean was sitting on the edge of the table by his cage, looking down. I decided to see what had him so engrossed that he didn’t even look up when I entered the room. And there I saw his love, Sol, trapped on the floor, without wings to fly back up. I lifted Sol to her cage and Little Bean flew over to her, joyously kissing her on the beak.
I have no doubt that animals are Souls, too, as they also come in all different states of consciousness, like people. I have learned a lot about courage and Divine love from Bean, as he is always willing to put aside his own interests to protect those he loves.

Thank you, Nettie, for sharing your wonderful insights about divine love. Your story about Little Bean beautifully illustrates the profound wisdom and love that our animal companions can demonstrate. His courage in protecting Sweetheart and devotion to Sol reminds us that even the smallest creatures can express extraordinary consciousness and selfless love. Your recognition that animals are souls on their own spiritual journeys, capable of teaching us about divine love and selfless service, resonates deeply with the truth I see in Little Bean’s story. Perhaps it is through their pure, unconditional love that our animal friends bring us closer to understanding the divine.
