Recently, my computer failed to start up like normal when I did a restart. The wallpaper image that usually pops up early in the process wasn’t there. In its place was a bright yellow screen. After a good half hour, which didn’t feel all that good, the computer was back in operation.

One of my first thoughts when all of this was going on was: “How is this good?” I always look for the silver lining in the dark cloud—a lesson, an insight, or perhaps a karmic debt being balanced.

Later that evening, I realized two things: 1) how much I appreciate having an uplifting image as a background (wallpaper) on my computer, and 2) a spiritual exercise came to mind.

Since I’d been contemplating about ways to attract more joy into my life throughout the day, why not create an uplifting “background image” as wallpaper for the inner screen of my mind! That way, instead of allowing clouds to drift by in the form of uninvited thoughts—thus blocking out my sun— my wallpaper would repel these negative influences and keep my mind and emotions balanced and buoyant.

With a little imagination, anyone can create a spiritual wallpaper for the mind to add more joy, peace, or love. For example, every morning my wife, Oi, and I sing the ancient mantra, “HU.” Why not create a wallpaper of us singing HU on a beach in Hawaii overlooking the beautiful Pacific? Or maybe an image of our two cats dancing with the ducks and nutria at a nearby pond…or how about a colorful eagle flying with the sunrise?

What image will you create for your spiritual wallpaper? The only limit is your imagination!
