Years ago, I decided to become a member of a spiritual path which claimed to have a Living Teacher. This path taught that its spiritual master is always with me, and that by practicing various spiritual exercises on a regular basis, I could maintain a deep connection with that master and the Universal Consciousness that was everywhere and in all things. So, I diligently practiced these spiritual exercises a couple of times each day.
After several months, during one of my contemplations, I found myself wondering how much of what I had been taught about this new path was true. Was this “supposed” spiritual master truly always with me? Why not ask? I thought to myself.
I then posed a sincere two-part question in my mind, directed toward this master: “Are these teachings true, and, if so, are you really always with me? Please give me some kind of a sign.” I then wrapped up my contemplation and went into the living room to watch a movie. After that, I turned in for the night. I had forgotten about the question I had asked earlier in my contemplation.
Some hours later, I was awakened from sleep by the sound of music coming from our kitchen. That was strange, I thought. My wife was in bed next to me, asleep. I got up to see what was going on.
As soon as I entered the kitchen, I heard very clearly the words, “Daniel, my brother.” The Elton John song “Daniel” was coming from our under-the-counter clock radio. At that moment, the time read 12:12. I thought to myself, That is kind of interesting. What a coincidence to walk in and hear my name being called. But even more unusual was what I discovered next.
When I reached down to turn the radio off, I discovered that it was already in the OFF position. In order to turn it off, I had to switch it to the ON position, then back off again.
Even though I was only half awake, I was still struck by the sequence of events: 12:12, the song calling me by name, and the radio coming on by itself. That was when I remembered the question I had posed earlier in my contemplation.
I now had my answer. The spiritual master IS real and IS always with me.
