Reading Time: 2 minutes

By Gloria Lionz

The inspiration for this piece came after meeting several family members of a dear friend. Everyone was friendly but cautious about ‘who’ I was to their family member. There are so many ways to “be” with ‘strangers’ – Open, curious, welcoming, suspicious. After 2 days of interactions, I wondered how I could shift my responses to their vibes; just be myself.

I heard: “Oh, that’s child’s play.” The poem took me the rest of the way…

CHILD’S PLAY

Each day is brand new
Whether at home or traveling
Feeling energized or not
I stay open to whatever arrives

My perspective is intentional
Framed by the practice of noticing
My breath, my body, my heart
How easily a joke dissolves pretense

One might ask “what’s your secret?”
“Why do such simple things matter?”
Your questions tell me who you are
Helps me hear what’s unsaid

My compass isn’t the knowing
It’s my desire to know you
Then with a smile or a phrase
Let you see your brilliance

Child’s play isn’t hard
It just takes practice
Being open enough to celebrate
God’s presence in you
